If there’s any actress deserving of a franchise, it’s Angelina Jolie. While she may not always fill seats with her dramatic roles, she’s one of the few female stars who can draw an audience for sexy action thrillers like “Wanted” and the upcoming “Salt.” But she hasn’t had a franchise of her own since she said goodbye to the “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” series back in 2003. A sequel to “Wanted” will eventually happen, and I’ll always have hope for more adventures from “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” Yet for the time being I’m excited for Jolie’s potential as medical examiner Kay Scarpetta.
Jolie was cast as the character — protagonist of 17 mystery novels by Patricia Cornwell, including the recently published “The Scarpetta Factor” — last April. But we haven’t heard much else about the role, which would put the actress back in “Bone Collector” territory. Until now. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the untitled Scarpetta film is currently being scripted by Kerry Williamson, a fairly new screenwriter who has also written upcoming projects for Alexander Payne and Darren Aronofsky.
Williamson is reportedly coming up with an original storyline for Scarpetta rather than basing the film on one of Cornwell’s novels, which have followed the forensics expert through multiple job changes and romantic involvements. It’s unclear if the movie will begin with her initially positioned as Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia or be set in any of the books’ other locations, such as Miami, Charleston or New York City.
With so much background and history, Scarpetta could be introduced to moviegoers at any point. The important thing is for Williamson to leave things open for the character to continue in possible sequels. Of course, a follow-up could always go backwards for an earlier stand-alone case, a la “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” If this does end up a franchise, it can be like old mystery film series’ and require little sequentiality.

justjared report:
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie take their son Maddox, 8, to support their friends at the premiere of their new movie, Invictus, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Theater on Thursday (December 3) in Beverly Hills, Calif.
Clint Eastwood directed the flick (he directed Angelina in 2008′s Changeling). Both Brad and Angelina worked with Morgan Freeman (Brad and Morgan in 1995’s Seven, and Angelina and Morgan in 2008’s Wanted). Matt Damon also stars in the film (Brad and Matt co-starred in the Ocean’s franchise together).
The movie’s premise: Nelson Mandela (Freeman), in his first term as the South African President, initiates a unique venture to unite the apartheid-torn land: enlist the national rugby team on a mission to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
there is more film project? true or not?
“Ridley Scott is in discussions with Angelina Jolie for the femme fatale role in “Gucci,” a drama about murder and decadence in the Gucci fashion dynasty.
Fox 2000 is fashioning a 2010 start date for the film, and Scott is talking with Jolie to play Patrizia Gucci, who was sentenced to 29 years in jail for plotting the murder of her ex, Maurizio Gucci.
The drama is a priority for Fox 2000’s Elizabeth Gabler and Carla Hacken, with Scott Free and Giannina Facio producing.
The studio is about to hire a scribe to rewrite the drama that recaptures the glamorous days of the Gucci family dynasty in the 1970s and 80s, when the family was selling $500 million in product annually. Squabbles hobbled the clan until Maurizio, the grandson of founder Guccio Gucci, came out on top of a power struggle to run the family business. Just when he was about to reestablish the brand name by debuting a line designed by newcomer–and now film director–Tom Ford, Maurizio was gunned down in front of his Milan apartment in 1995.
There are still moving pieces in the package–the script is still being developed and Scott needs to lock down an actor to play Maurizio. The director has approached his “Body of Lies” star Leonardo DiCaprio, but he is not attached at this point.
“Gucci” becomes the second big project at Fox 2000 for Jolie. The studio is developing the Patricia Cornwell novel series about medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta for Jolie to play the lead role in a film produced by Mark Gordon and Geyer Kosinski.
As for Jolie, she is likely to next star with Sam Worthington in “The Tourist,” the Spyglass thriller that has Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck in line to direct. Pending a deal with the director, the hope is to begin production early next year.
Scott is in post-production with the Russell Crowe-Cate Blanchett-starrer “Robin Hood” for Universal Pictures and Imagine.”
wow….very very interesting!
Angie’s new project more news maybe has been revealed: Wow !!
MTV said,
“Last week it was revealed that Angelina Jolie is well on her way to making “The Tourist” her next starring project. Today one more maybe has been revealed: “The Lives of Others” writer/director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. With key stars aligning around the movie, a 2011 release is looking likely.
Jolie’s participation in “The Tourist” hinges on finding the right person to direct, Variety reports. Donnersmarck apparently fits the criteria, so expect the dominoes to fall if/when the director’s participation is confirmed. Presuming everything works out, “Tourist” will be his first effort since his Oscar-winning work on “The Lives of Others” (2006).
Jolie’s would-be starring role in “The Tourist” would cast her as an Interpol agent who involves an American tourist in her plot to nab a criminal, also her former lover. “Terminator Salvation” and “Avatar” star Sam Worthington is already set to play the titular tourist, and his pairing with Jolie should make for a powerful duo. The movie is actually a remake of the 2005 French thriller, “Anthony Zimmer.”
Of course, Jolie is no shoe-in. There’s still the question of the “Wanted” sequel. Even though her character (spoiler) doesn’t survive the events of the first movie (end spoiler), MTV has already learned that there’s a plan for bringing her back. How “The Tourist” might change that plan remains to be seen. ”

It was announced that the 34-year-old actress replaced Charlize Theron in The Tourist.
Looks like these two will be working together!
The Tourist is about an Interpol agent (Jolie) in Europe who manipulates an American tourist (Sam Worthington) in an attempt to flush out an elusive criminal who was her former lover.
